Homer spit is the end of the land. From Here – you either turn back – or continue by boat. Homer is very proud of its Halibut fishing and its very laid-back atmosphere. The narrow piece of land stretches from Homer into Kachemak Bay and is surrounded by water from all sides. It takes less than a 5-minute walk across the narrow spit from side to side. It is also an RV and small boat heaven. The views of the mighty glaciers are all around the other side of the water. It is a beautiful place.
It was time to go beyond the land end, so we took a water taxi to drop us in the Kachemak Bay State Park to hike the Glacier Lake trail. The water taxis are not very frequent and charge good dollars for their service. We set a drop-off location and a different pickup location and time. Due to the taxi availability, we had to choose between 4 hours or 6 hours visit off the mainland, in the park. As you can expect, we defaulted to the more extended stay. We felt comfortable enough to take a short one-mile detour (each direction) from the main glacier trail to the point marked on the maps as the “Grewningk Tram,” and had a cable car logo at that point. Curious about what will we see – we hiked there. To our thrill, the end of the detour was a mighty and stormy glacier river that is impossible to cross unless you use a cable car. Given there is no electricity at that place, the tram connecting both banks of the river can drive only two passengers at a time and is operated by the passengers who are pulling themselves by a cable. When we were hanging above the middle of the river, looking down to the stormy water, our brian translated the water motion – as if we were the one drifting. That was a thrilling experience.
Back to the main trail – the trail was easy, long, and not very interesting up to the spectacular Glacier lake. Amazing views of the glacier and many ice debris close to the shore. From there – we hiked down to Halibut cove – where the cliff is steep, and the cove is nested with old traditional wooden poles that were used to dry fish.
