Key highlights: | Kayaking on Boya Lake. Alaskan HWY to Teslin. |
For a change, it was a warmer morning and a perfect setting to get on Boya lake. Boya Lake water is super clear and calm. With the changing sunlight partially and intermittently covered by clouds, the lake wore diverse and ever-changing colors. We inflated our Kayak and set ourselves to raw around one of the many islands in the lake (Don’t worry if you don’t have your kayak- the park offers rental of kayaks for $20CAD for two hours. It was the first day in the last days, with no rain, and the views were crisp and beautiful. As we entered Yukon, the road got broader yet more abundant. We skipped the first gas station on our way (targeting the next service station)- it was obviously a mistake. Once we got to the next service station (Rancherie hotel) – the location was closed for the season. The next gas station…. ran out of gas (the truck with the gas is two days delayed already, the lady said).
We got to Telsin with less than 15 miles to go on our fuel gauge (don’t worry- we carry another five spare gas gallon container in the trunk, just in case). We turned to the gas station that was also the RV park we had reserved…. despite having a reservation with them – the lake flooded two-thirds of their lot, and they had no space for us. Well…it was a feature more than a bug, after all. So we continued another 20miles and looked for a first-come-first-served space in the Yukon Government campsites. We got the last spot in the Teslin Lake campground, offering wide and long lots and free wood fire. Unfortunately, the trails leading to the lake beach were closed… as they were flooded as well. It was a lovely day of driving, with little active action.
