We guess that the road from Telkwa to Mazdian Provincial Park was incredible. We could only assume it as we woke up to a showery and foggy morning. Heavy low clouds followed our 3 hours drive to Mazdian park and only rare windows of clarity showed how beautiful the road could have been. We were lucky to see a lot of this landscape yesterday from the top of Malkow Lookout – but today was not that nice. The “good” aspect of the heavy rain was overflowed rivers, with impressive current and streams.
Meziadin Lake park campground is beautiful, and site 52 is located just on the water with an electric hookup (no water, no sewer). Upon arrival, a whole army of mosquitos attacked us from all over. The number of mosquitoes here is unbelievable. Protected with an anti-itch, we parked the trailer and started to travel HWY 37A, also known as Glacier Highway. Just over 1Km into the ride, we saw our first Grizzly (we think) bear crossing our road (exciting), and our luck started to change. The rain almost stopped, and the sky mostly cleared up. Bear Glacier was beautiful, and the road to Stewart was full of waterfalls in the narrow canyon.
From Stewart we continued to visit Salmon Glacier, one of the most significant road-accessible glaciers. To visit it, you need to exit Canada, enter Alaska (at Hyder), travel 30km on a dirt gravel road, and return back to Canada. Around the 20th Kilometer milestone, we took a wrong turn on the dirt road and started climbing into the active mine. The views from the mine were inspiring, yet the road is badly maintained. (only 4×4)- We stopped one of the truck drivers next to one of the smaller glaciers – and he helped us turn around to find the “right” Glacier. The road to the top of Salmon Glaicer was still blocked with snow and will fully open on July 1st (due to the stormier and longer than usual winter). We could drive up to the 27th KM, where we could see and be appreciating the impressive Salmon Glacier “finger” lookout. Another spectacular day finished with hamburgers on the lake.
