Liard Hot Springs

It took us some time to figure out where can we dump and fill water in Watson Lake (hint – not in our campground, and water and dump are in different places) – but everyone was very friendly in town, and we were on our way to Liard Hot Springs.
The further we drove, the road south of Watson Lake was getting prettier and prettier. Liard River is wide, and the route offers very good wildlife viewing opportunities. During our drive today, we saw herds of Bisons, some with young cubs and three different black bears – on three separate spots.
We stopped at the Coal River for a good look at the river making 90-degree turns, and drove the 3KM (that are not RV friendly) to see the vast Smith River falls.
We arrived at our campsite in the Liard campground early afternoon – and were again welcomed by the army of our mosquitoes friends. Unlike Eclipse hot springs, Liard hot springs are a provincial park, wonderful looking, wild, and yet, less spoiling. The spring is spouting water at various temperatures over time – creating hot streams of up to 140F that even out deeper in the pool. We enjoyed the water and were nervous whenever we stepped out into the mosquitos’ clouds. This time- we had made better arrangements for the night and built ourselves into a double defense system (we called the Bunker) in our RV- by using the bug net of our gazebo as a bed cover – we hoped and achieved a quiet night.
Our conclusion was simple from our last two days’ experiences: the people of Canada and Alaska must love their homes. They can’t leave their homes in the winter due to the weather and can not leave their home in the summer due to the mosquitos – what a hard place to live in. So, if you ever come to this area – be prepared! Beautiful but harsh.
