It’s our last morning in Alaska, and the best way to start it – is by panning gold. Our RV camp is an old gold mine still active in some parts. The camp staff (that does not want to work too hard) is bringing some pile of dirt from the mine and will let you use their pan and dirt for $10 for 2 hours. I practically had no clue what I was doing, which is why I found two lovely pieces of gold ( I think :)) in my first panning. The sun was out, and time was flying – and just by the time I gave up, the panning guide showed up to teach me how to do it right. Unfortunately, it did not help me at all, and I only retired with my first finding.
The road to Dawson City is mostly a dirt road, and it is called “Top Of The World” HWY- as it is winding at the top of the ridge with endless open views from all around. The weather was gorgeous, and the customs person on the Canadian border was very service oriented.
There is no bridge on the HWY to get to Dawson City. So to cross the roaring Yukon river, we had to take a small and old ferry – that is, taking you back in time to a city that got stuck at the Klondike Gold Rush time.
Dawson city has no paved roads, and the buildings are primarily old (or keeping the old decoration). It was a great reason to start our experience of the “city” (OMG) in the Pub with some very contemporary and fantastically mixed cocktails at Bombay Peggy’s Pub.
