Total Distance:5641 Miles.
Traveled Today:0 Miles.
Key Highlights:Denali dog kennel.
Mount Healy Overlook Trail.
Rock Creek Trail.

The Savage River campground is small, intimate, and private, as you can expect from the NP campsites.

Early morning we took the free transit bus that runs over the first 15 paved miles of the park to the visitor center. While waiting, we got a visit from a healthy Moose female for a good vibe to start the day. At the visitor center, we were able to register for a full-day hike in the wilderness (a small group of 11 people + a guide )  for the following day.

The staff at the bus stop was kind enough to swap our bus ticket for tomorrow – and we decided to play it safe for today on the well-paved paths of the NP entrance.

We went to see the beautiful Alaskan sled dogs in their kennels.  The park offers three daily demonstrations of the dogs, and it was interesting to see how eager they were to go wild and pull the sled. It is surely a great place for dog lovers (not Ruti). While the dogs are trained to love the energy burn of the sled pulling, we did come out with our doubts about how “dog-friendly” this entire process was. Nevertheless, the park staff really loves their dogs.

The Hike of the day was Healy overlook trail – a 5.5 miles out and back trail that gains ~1200 feet of elevation (400 meters)- for some amazing views of the landscape. It is a very diverse trail and a very beautiful one. We highly recommend this trial. From the top of the outlook – the mightiness of the park is revealed, and with the sense of safety of the trail –  it was a sheer highlight.

We finished the day by hiking the unassuming Rock Creek Trail – a standard and boring forest trail.

PS: We did not see Mt. Denali today as well.
