We have made it to day 50! What a great trip! Today -we are heading to the Canadian Rockies. First, we stopped for an excellent breakfast on the banks of Bear Lake, another local lake with sandy beaches and blue water. Then, the road crosses Prince George, which was uninspiring last time and was even less this time.
After refueling, we continued traveling into HWY 16 towards the mountains. The most exciting stop was the Ancient Forest – a rare inland rain forest fed by the rain coming from the Rockies. As the place is so lush, it is rarely hit by fires, and huge Cedar trees are growing there. Some of these trees are believed to be 2000 years old. The trail is exceptionally well maintained, and most of it is built as a boardwalk – to protect the plants from people’s miss-steps. The forest was beautiful and a good chilly hike for another summer day. Finally, it crossed a stream and finished at a modest but lovely waterfall.
Upon arriving at McBride – a small community- we were welcomed by the mosquitos again. They definitely make the trip less fun. Ruti stayed at the RV, and I went up the unpaved 4×4 way to the first parking lot of the local McBride Mountain Trails (6K into the road that is primarily a mountain biking park) – for some great views of the Caribou ridge and the valley.
