Key Highlights | Tok Cut-off Highway Liberty Falls trail (****) Stroll along the Chitina River O’Brien creek – watch the fisherman |
Another great scenic drive day. The Tok Cutoff was taking us to the edge of the Wrangler st-Elias national park. less than now, hour after we took the road – we started to see magnificent views of mount Wrangler. As we got closer to the park, the other mountains on the ridge started to show up: Drum and Stratford peaks are magnificent. There is very little development between Tok and the national park – and there were limited opportunities to hike/bike (we stopped at every tourist info on the way to see if we were missing something – we did not). When we got closer to the park – at Copper Center – the national headquarters was very informative – and offered us some good hikes at the park’s edge. We chose the fantastic views of the short hike of Liberty Falls – it’s a 2.3 miles round trip to a trail that does not actually lead into the falls – but has a good view of them from a distance and a great view of the park. We found out that we did not complete the trail all the way to the lake – as the trail from the top peak was not well marked – and we did not want to risk getting off the cliff from the “wrong side”.
Chitina feels that it froze in time 100 years ago. As we got closer to 4th of July – the city was folded with fisher that came for the great salmon that just entered the Chintina river – a huge , massive and impressive galicer water river – that is reach with silt (hence the gray water) from the glacier sediments. The fishing along the river was a fascinating show of traditional techniques in a very rural setting.
